Have you had a good first day, too?

We went out for a walk around town. 

Enjoying the fresh air, visiting a shrine and a temple, grabbing some food, eating under the clear sky, moon with us.

Equipping ourselves with a few inevitable lucky charms for 2007. It's the year of the pig, by the way.

Oh, I so much long for the sixth of January... you might know I am a little bit a superstitious girl and can't, just can't do the laundry right now... There is the time that is called the days between the years, beginning after Christmas and ending 6th of January and in Germany it's said that it would bring bad luck if you are doing the laundry during that period of time... I only felt relieved of that burdening superstition when Dagny was a baby and the washing machine could hardly stand still for a single day...

Four more days of piling up ahead... and then... oh, better not think a bout then.

Anybody (von Euch Maedels in Deutschland) else facing this dilemma? Drowning in laundry but not daring to wash?

meine körbe stapeln sich... bügelwäsche as well as ungewaschenes. vielleicht läuft´s mal von selber in die maschine? is ja auch egal, oder? *g*

Actually.... no. My great-grandmother has broken with that and it didn't bring bad luck over the family for the last four generations. :o)

En plus... I'm Christian, so I have no longer beeing afraid of the old heathen bad spirits, chasing each other in those nights. (That's where that does come from: washing wasn't thought to be the problem, but one was afraid some of those bad and hounted spirits could catch themselfes in the laundry hangig to dry. But there's nothing bad known about tumble dryers... ;-)

ich hab' die tage extra noch mal nachgelesen. das "problem" ist nicht das waschen, das darfste. nur darfste die wäsche nicht zum trocknen nach draußen oder auf den dachboden hängen (wohnung bzw. trockner geht offenbar).

Oh ja, meine Wäsche stapelt sich auch, aber nicht aus einem Aberglauben, sondern aus purer Faulheit.
Nun ist schon so viel da, dass ich keine Lust mehr habe anzufangen ;o)

At first I was feeling good that I now have an excuse for not doing the laundry. Then I felt bad because I did do some wash in the days right after Christmas. But now I feel better again because I didn't hang anything out to dry. Just to be on the safe side though, I'm not going to do any laundry until the 6th. We did set off a LOT of fireworks -- and so did all our neighbors -- so hopefully all the bad spirits are scared away anyway!

Die Wäsche hängt neben mir auf dem Wäscheständer - ich muss gestehen, dass ich soeben zum ersten Mal davon gehört habe! Ich wasche also fröhlich weiter ... beste Wünsche für das neue Jahr,

Ich piepe auch mal, hab Deinen Blog vor einem Weilchen entdeckt und gucke seitdem fast täglich rein :-)
Ich kenne den Brauch, es sind die Rauhnächte in denen die nordische Holda (die Wind- und Wolkenspinnerin, im späteren Märchen dann auch Frau Holle) mit ihren Mädels unterwegs ist und sich, wie oben schon erwähnt, nicht in der Wäsche verfangen soll. Übrigens auch nicht in Spinnfäden(vom Spinnrad) und ein paar andere Sachen waren da noch, die man nicht tun soll in dieser Zeit. Ich halte mich nicht dran, weder bei der Wäsche noch beim Spinnen...
Du hast einen tollen Blog, ich lese den richtig gern. Hab bis zur Elternzeit (meine Tochter ist 2) in einer japanischen Firma (in Deutschland) gearbeitet und bin seitdem Fan :-)

Hi! Also ich kenne es so: Man darf waschen, man darf auch die Waesche raus haengen - aber: nicht ueber Nacht! Erklaerung meiner Oma ging wie folgendermassen: In diesen Naechten reitet Wotan durch die Gegend. Wenn die Waesche draussen haengt und sie im Wind flattert kann das Pferd scheuen und Wotan faellt vom Pferd... daraufhin wird er so wuetend dass im folgenden Jahr jemand im betreffenden Haus stirbt. Soweit die Legende. Meine Oma meinte, hoechstwahrscheinlich haetten sich das ein paar Frauen ausgedacht, die Tagein, Tagaus die Waesche (mit der Hand) waschen mussten und sich einfach ein paar freie Tage wuenschten...

Auch von mir noch: Gutes Neues! Das mit der Wäsche ist mir neu, aber meine Mutter hat mit ein paar anderen Varianten aufgewartet: Das, was man in den "Unternächten" träumt, geht im jeweiligen Monat des folgenden Jahres in Erfüllung... Und (bestimmt eine ausschließlich deutsche Sitte): An Silvester muß Sauerkraut gegessen werden, wenn im Folgejahr das Geld nicht ausgehen soll.

Hier hat sich jeder an die "keine-Geschenke-Regel" gehalten. Wenn ich Deinen allerliebst bemäntelten "Ausrutscher" sehe, denke ich jedoch fast, wir sollten das nochmal neu diskutieren...

We have the "just a little something rule", that I always keep and my husband always breaks to say "thank you" for a long year's hard work on my part. I got a digital photo display - very cool. I think that makes us geek brides of uber-geek bridegrooms ;-)

Also, the only thing I know about laundry and that time of year is that leaving the laundry hanging over Saint Sylvester (Dec 31) is bad luck. Never mind that though ... I did laundry regularly, am still inundated and not out of luck at the moment, it seems.
